08 Jun Public Contracts over £5 million require a plan for Carbon emission reduction.
The Government have announced that from the end of September 2021, any Construction businesses tendering for public contracts over £5 Million, will need to include a carbon emission reduction plan and a commitment from the business to reaching net- zero carbon by 2050 in with their bid.
In an article produced but Construction News they have highlighted the changes to tendering for the larger contracts in a direct move from the government to work towards the pledge they made in 2019 to reach net Zero by 2050. The report companies will need to include will have 3 sections covering different areas of ‘Emissions’. Including emissions from Waste disposal and suppliers, vehicles and indirect emissions eg electricity productions.
This news has seen large constructions companies creating jobs with in their firms whose responsibility it will be to manage and reduce carbon emission throughout the company processes.
This change does not yet effect SME’s but it is likely that even on the lower value contracts an increased focus on emissions, sustainability and environmental strategies will be seen in quality questions and compliance.
